doing business in Colombia

A little warning about doing business in Colombia, If you have employees you need to make sure you have contacts. What every you are paying them you need to figure with benefits are going to cost you double. So if you are paying some one $350 per month, the real cost is going to be 700 a month.
I know this has been a big problem for us in the past and has been a problem for many other expats. A contract will not protect you from paying this. The government is very very pro worker.
Some of the benefits you need to pay:
Time work, 15% of salary
Vacation time one month salary
Each year you need to pay one month Salary paid in December and June
Heath insurance $60 per month.

IF you do not pay this the employee just goes straight to government and complain.
So far Colombia is one of the hardest countries I have worked in.

I agree

Yes Ken, I must agree. I found Cartagena one of the absolute worst places to operate a business. No one shows up on time, no one seems to care about there work. Skilled labor almost does not exist. quality of work is so poor you need to supervise 100% of the time. Unless you can micro manage do not open a business in Cartagena.
